The importance of setting up ministries within a state cannot be overemphasized. Apart from the fact that they allow for fluidity and more effectiveness in operations, they ensure more organization in the functioning of the state government.

The ministries are the civil service departments that are responsible for delivering various types of government services. Each ministry is headed by a permanent secretary. At times ministries are amalgamation and at other times, they are split.

Lagos State has over twenty-four (24) ministries and is located in in the state capital. Below are ministries in Lagos state as well as their functions and importance:

Lagos State ministry of youth, sports and social development

This ministry is charged with the responsibility to plan, device and implement the state policies on Youth, sport and social development.

Lagos State ministry of justice

It is concerned with the administration of justice. The ministry is under the coordinator of the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, who is often assisted by the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary. The ministry is responsible for handling legal aspects of government activities, ensure effective justice system and enhance public law within the state.

Lagos State ministry of physical planning and urban development

This ministry is established and charged with the responsibility to plan, device and implement the state policies on Physical Planning and Urban development. They are responsible for Vetting and approval of building plans, Undertaking comprehensive land use, re-planning, improvement, Centralization and control of planning Lagos state and managing movable and unmovable properties within the state.

Lagos State ministry of economic planning and budget

It is charged with the responsibility to plan, device, draft and implement the state policies on Economic Planning and Budget. The ministry was formed on June 2009. They facilitate efficient and effective mobilization, planning, allocation and utilization of resources for socio-economic transformation of the state and ensure continuous policies through unbiased resource management.

Lagos State ministry of finance

Late in 1995, Economic Development was separated from Ministry of Finance and merged with Budget to become Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget. The finance ministry was structured into Personnel management, Planning, Research and Statistics as well as Finance and supplies. The ministry is a unique Agency that provides the financial backbone that helps government translate its vision of providing the dividends of democracy to the seeming population.

This ministry basically has an overall responsibility of strategizing, promoting and developing sustainable policies for energy planning to ensure availability of reliable energy for all residents in Lagos State. The ministry is as old as Lagos State. Prior, to 1999, the ministry was named office of Establishment, Training and pensions but was amended to its present status. It is a core human resource management agency of government saddled with the responsibility of human capital development, career management, institution/organization policy reforms, Personnel Budget Planning maintenance of harmonious industrial climate, management consultancy and pension matters.

This is another ministry that started as far back as when the state was created. Their mission is to deliver qualitative equitable healthcare service to the citizenry applying appropriate technology by highly motivated staff.

Lagos State ministry of housing

Created in 1999, this ministry is charged with the responsibility of formulating, reviewing and implementing Lagos State Housing policies. It is also responsible for the provision of quality housing for Lagos State Citizenry, Promotion of Artisanal skills development in housing production, Supervision of the maintenance of existing Housing Estates, Co-ordination of agencies involved in housing matters, Formulation, review and implementation of Lagos State Housing policies, and similar services.

Lagos State ministry of information and strategy

The ministry evolved from the office of the Secretary to the Military Government. It is responsible for publicity and mass media, public relation of Government, Archive matters, publication and advertising and management of information on the website of the state Government and other state-owned platforms.

Lagos State ministry of local government and community affairs

Governance as it relates Local Government forms the central theme of this ministry. The ministry, over the years had undergone series of changes since inception due to the constitutional autonomy granted to the third tier of government. In a determine effort to turn things around, the state government embarked on new policies , various programmes and activities at making Lagos state comparable to other modern cities of its kind. Since Local Governments are closest to the people, effective performance of their assigned duties and responsibilities will definitely have a spillover effect on the economy. Lagos State ministry of science and technology

The ministry was created in February 2004 by the administration of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu from what used to be the office of the Special Adviser on Information Technology and Special Service. It is basically responsible for Applying science and technology for solving problems in order to make Lagos a model State and Applying science and technology for solving problems in order to make Lagos a model State.

Lagos State ministry of special duties and intergovernmental relations

This ministry was carved out of the political and general administration office of the Governor’s office during the first term of Bola Tinubu’s administration in 1999. The ministry has the Safety and Emergency Agencies in the state under her supervision and these include the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Safety Board, The Command and Control Centre and Fire Service. The ministry also coordinates Federal agencies in the state and work to attain mutual beneficial relationship on inter-governmental relations matter.

Lagos State ministry of environment

It was established in 1979 by the first elected Governor of Lagos State. It was later merged with ministry of Physical Planning and upgraded the present Office of the Environment to a full-fledged Ministry. The mandate of the ministry was primarily to secure a clean, healthier and sustainable Environment which will be conducive for tourism, economic growth and wellbeing of its citizenry.

Lagos State ministry of transportation

This ministry was merged with Ministry of works in 1984. In 1994, it was separated under Oyinola administration and became Ministry of Public Transport. The ministry is responsible for ensuring affordable and efficient movement of people and goods through a well-articulated transport policy and providing world class rail, air, sea and road transport infrastructure. They are also responsible for creating efficient traffic management and enforce traffic regulations.

Lagos State ministry of waterfront infrastructure development

It was created in June 2007 from the defunct Lagos State Waterfront and Tourism Development Corporation. This was as a result of the administration’s resolve to ensure rapid development of the waterfront and protection of requisite and world class infrastructure. It is responsible for the provision of infrastructure and services at the Lagos State Waterfronts by harnessing resources to ensure well protected environment that is attractive to tourist and observers.

Lagos State ministry of women affairs and poverty alleviation

Formally known as the Department of Women and Children in the Ministry of Youths, Sports and Social Welfare, this ministry was later upgraded to Bureau under the Governor’s Office. Subsequently, it metamorphosed into Women Commission in 1993. The ministry is in charge of women development, children development, poverty alleviation, planning research and statistics and skill acquisition development.

It was created to promote and sustain entrepreneurship and employment through effective use of wealth creation strategies and resources by collaborating with all stakeholders. They are responsible for creating an enabling institution that creates sustainable wealth for Lagos citizens.

Lagos State ministry of tourism, art and culture

Founded in 1995, the Ministry of Tourism, Art and Culture is responsible for Initiating, formulating, executing, monitoring and evaluating policies relating to Tourism, Arts and Culture. They promote investment in hotels; take charge of hotel licensing, tourism research and development. They also organize tourism and hospital trainings on behalf of the state.

Lagos State ministry of works and infrastructure

This ministry consists of two offices: office of works and infrastructure. This ministry serves as the Secretary to the State Executive Council. They coordinate the activities of Ministries and Government agencies, especially on the implementation of Government Policies and Decisions. They also deal with matters relating to condition of service of Political Officer holders in the Executive, the Legislative and the Judiciary.
